Piper methysticum
(Exert from my research proposal)
Traditional use:
Piper methysticum is a sacred herb that has been used ceremonially and consumed as a brew in rituals by the people in the South Pacific Islands, (Polynesia, Melanesia and Micronesia) for hundreds of years.
Many native populations have harvested and prepared the ‘root’, and made into a traditional drink or tea and is prepared by hand grinding the roots against coral and then pounded with a rock or a stone on top of a log.
This has become an integral part of culture and community. The herb can be taken socially, ceremonially or used in religious times, welcoming ceremonies and even at funerals.
Traditionally prescribed to treat anxiety and insomnia, and utilized for its pain reliving and ‘anaesthetic’ properties. used for treating urinary tract infections and as it is an analgesic, it was used to treat any pain related ailments. Some sexually transmitted infections such as syphilis and gonorrhoea were treated. As Piper methisticum is a sedative and a hypnotic it was also used as a muscle relaxant and a sleep tonic.
Passiflora incarnata
Traditional use:
Passion flower is a woody perennial climbing vine, used mainly for its arial parts, mainly the leaves. Traditionally used to treat seizures, hysteria and insomnia and known for its sedative, anxiolytic (anti-anxiety) and anodyne (pain relief) qualities.
This fabulously lively vine is one you cannot walk past, it is exceptionally beautiful, indications it can be used for includes: restlessness, agitation, gastro intestinal disorders, Anxiety– calming the nervous system, withdrawal from opiates, cannabis and alcohol, nervous stress, spasmodic asthma.
The Anti- anxiety effect is a result of the brain releasing of a chemical messenger called gamma aminobutyric acid (GABA). GABA reduces activity and calms down over excited neurons making you feel more relaxed. Passionflower is said to be useful for back pain due to its action on the nerves. Soothes the digestive tract, which plays a large role in brain function as the gut & brain are closely related. Calming properties may also be helpful for ADD and ADHD.
